Putting an End to Veterinarians Prescribing Pills for Profit
Pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors are attempting to maintain veterinarian offices as the sole source of pet medications, not informing consumers of choice and the option of paying less for pet drugs.
As a result, most people believe veterinarian's offices are the only place to buy drugs for their pets - they aren't. You can get a veterinary prescription and have it dispensed at a pharmacy or a site like PetsDrugMart.ca. Pet medications are 20-98% less expensive through PetsDrugMart.ca than from the vet's office. We want to keep pet medications accessible, less expensive, and readily available.
Bring Ethical Practices Back to Veteranary Care
Together We Can Create Change for the Better
Under the Veterinarians Act and College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO) regulations, a veterinarian licensed by the College is authorized to prescribe and dispense pet drugs. Most Veterinarians prescribe and dispense the drugs themselves, but the CVO also indicates that: "Once the client is provided with a prescription, it is left to them to decide where they will have the prescription filled." It should be your right to choose where you want to dispense the prescription medications, and your vet should inform you of where it's possible to do that.
Veterinarians can legally charge a reasonable price for writing a prescription, and every vet office may charge differently. The issue is that pharmacies like PetsDrugMart.ca need access to pet medications to be able to fulfill a prescription - this is where we challenge the CVO policy that prevents or strongly discourages vets from selling and supplying pet medications to pharmacies, unless in periods of shortages or crisis.
